CAMBRIDGE, MA – State
senate candidate Jeff Ross issued a statement in the wake of today’s
report that federal officials have decided not to provide fast track
funding for a proposed MBTA station in Somerville’s Assembly Square.
“The proposed Orange Line MBTA station
would provide rapid transit access to one of the most densely
populated areas in New England,” said Ross.
“It is simply inexcusable that nine rail
lines run through Somerville, but the city has only one T stop to its
name. I fully share Mayor Curtatone’s commitment to bring the Orange
Line into, rather than merely through, the city of Somerville. While
the federal government may not believe that this project is worthy of
special consideration, I have spoken with many residents of this area
who feel otherwise and if elected I will be bringing our shared
concerns to the Governor.”
The Boston Herald reported today that the
Federal Transit Authority has decided not to provide the project with
fast-track financial support.
Ross is
currently one of four candidates in the race for the Middlesex,
Suffolk, and Essex senate seat, which includes portions of
Somerville. Ross says that he is committed to keeping the
Commonwealth’s mass transit safe, affordable, and accessible to all
That commitment includes providing Somerville with more and better
transit options.
Attorney Ross also pointed out the
inequity of the current situation - the Assembly Square neighborhood
is also home to Somerville’s District Court.
“A citizen’s ability to gain immediate
access to our courts is one of the most precious elements of our
nation’s democracy,” Ross said. “Our Constitution promises equal
protection under the law for all -- not just those who can get in the
door.”
