Archived Campaign Updates

Jeff has a proven track record of advocacy and action on tough social justice issues. Through his work as a human rights attorney, he has represented marginalized citizens in a variety of cutting edge social justice fields.  Prior to this, he served U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein, two highly respected federal judges, and President Clinton's Commission for Civil Rights.

In his legal career, Jeff has worked as a pro bono attorney with more than a dozen non-profit organizations, has taken on more than 100 pro bono cases and invested more than a thousand hours of legal time to work with victims of trafficking and domestic violence, and representing union employees in post-grievance proceedings.  Jeff believes that protecting Progressive values is more than votes at meetings, more than a phone call or a letter.  It's the willingness and the know-how to take on any foe in order to protect the rights of a fellow human being.  When it comes to tough social justice issues, he has a history of pushing for positive social change, which is what I believe this district needs.

Jeff doesn’t just support progress; he strives to create it.  When Governor Romney tried to force the Commonwealth into the right-wing policy of implementing a national ID card that would hold people's confidential information, he took action, creating an effective ad campaign to advocate for victims of domestic violence that were adversely affected by the administration's overtly discriminatory licensing and enforcement policies, and forming the core group of plaintiffs in a groundbreaking case by the ACLU against the RMV.  These actions have led to the RMV inviting the ACLU and Jeff to assist in re-writing the regulations to conform with our Constitution.

As an openly gay man, Jeff is sensitive to the issues that affect the LGBT community and is best qualified to advocate for equal rights and fundamental dignity of every person.  Recently, he successfully petitioned the Cambridge City Council to publicly support Representative Carl Sciortino’s transgender discrimination bill.  Jeff also believes that women must be given every opportunity to make their own responsible decisions and will work hard to ensure that choice remains free in Massachusetts by expanding buffer zones around clinics and providing age-appropriate and medically accurate sex education to our children.

Having worked side by side for years with the communities in the district, Jeff appreciates that the middle class is being squeezed out by deficiencies in affordable housing, job insecurity, unfair labor practices, deficient public education and a woefully inadequate public transportation system.  As Senator, he will work to ensure the reauthorization of affordable housing, to work with labor leaders and businesses towards majority reauthorization and privacy protection measures in the workplace, to bring more education funding to the cities and towns, and to support and expand dedicated public transportation as the most efficient and environmentally sound system.

Jeff’s grandfather dedicated his life to serving as a firefighter, which caused Jeff to develop an immense respect for the work of our public safety officials.  His commonsense approach to law enforcement is built upon the principle that by increasing awareness and mutual respect, we can balance the protection of human dignity and community safety.

Jeff strongly supports progressive tax policies and the governor’s Municipal Partnership Act as the first step towards returning funding to our cities and towns.  He is outspoken about the need to strengthen the tax base by encouraging alternative energy and biotech development.  As someone who has studied and written about high tech export markets and worked to promote international tech trade, Jeff is uniquely qualified to facilitate this development in the district.

Jeff Ross is a Progressive Democrat.  He has been very proactive in his work as an attorney and a community activist.  He will carry this experience to Beacon Hill, working to bring communities together to find real solutions to real problems.  He strongly believes that government should be designed to help people do more and do better.  Jeff will work hard to return to these roots to help build business opportunities, protect working families and ensure equal rights and fundamental dignity.

Elect Jeff Ross to the State Senate on Sept.11.

Message from Jeff Ross

Dear Neighbor ,
I am running for the State Senate in the 2007 Special Election for the Middlesex, Suffolk, Essex State Senate district.  As the Commonwealth enters a critical stage in its history, our vibrant district needs an ardent Progressive advocate, who is passionate about the issues facing our communities.  Our founding fathers wanted free thinkers in government.  The direction which the Commonwealth will take in the coming years ought to result from our ideals, not political connections and high priced lobbyists.  I am the Progressive Democrat in this race with a track record of strong and influential advocacy on progressive issues.

Our community’s concerns demand much of our elected officials and community leaders. Today’s problems demand that we strengthen the relationship between local and state officials, and that we seek social justice for workers and families.  Only by rebuilding these ties do our ideals stand a chance of turning into concrete solutions to the critical issues of the day.  I am a pragmatic consensus builder who will build upon the outstanding work of Senator Barrios toward affordable housing, better access to healthcare, safer streets and progressive economic development.  I will address these issues with hard work and progressive policies that reflect our community’s shared values and diverse population.  I will give this district the representation it deserves from Day One.

I need your support, and look forward to building partnerships and dialogue as your State Senator.  We are going to have a tough race ahead and I need to count on your support to preserve progressive values.  Please get involved to volunteer, have coffee with me, be a block captain, host a house party or just meet to talk about the issues.

Together we can achieve social justice.  Please vote for me, Jeff Ross, the Progressive Democrat, on September 11, 2007.

                                             Yours truly,

                                                   Jeff Ross
